A Dozen Years Ago. . .

My life changed forever.  July 25, 2000 is the day I became a Mom.  God blessed me with a beautiful baby girl after a long and difficult delivery.  Looking back, I see how different my story could have been. . . the struggle of infertility prior to conceiving this angel. . . those few moments immediately following her delivery when she was whisked away from me and I prayed out loud, “Baby, cry for Mama, please cry. . . ”

She did finally take that breath and let out those long awaited cries.  I will forever be grateful for the skill of my medical team in making sure she entered this world and kept us both safe. . . our birth story wasn’t one of the easy ones.

This daughter of mine, she takes my breath away.  Today she stands eye level with me.  Her eyes shine with a bit of childish imp and so much maturity.  She loves Jesus, she loves family.  She is the daughter of my heart.

Image12 years. . . how did we get here?  Surely it was only yesterday when you were snuggled in my arms, when you were taking your first steps, saying your first words.

Time has flown in but a blink of the eye. . . today, darling daughter, you are 12 years old.  I look at you with tears in my eyes, joy in my heart, hope for your tomorrows.  You are a daughter of our Almighty God.  You continue to grow in grace and beauty. My prayer for you is that the grace you received at your Baptism and continued at your First Holy Communion will continue to shape who you are becoming.  Sanctifying grace is yours and I see it lived out within the young woman you are! When I look at you, I know how blessed I am. Through you, God changed my world and for that, I will be forever thankful.

A Birthday Prayer from Ithaca College

As I celebrate my birthday today,
permit me, God,
to celebrate it with you in this private way,
opening my heart to you.
If I reached this year
it is because of you,
who were never absent from my life.
Your presence has given me the will
to fight against what is selfish and evil
You have accompanied me, Lord,
with the power of your kindness
all along the journey of my life;
you have preserved me
with a strong and happy disposition to do your will.
Keep lit for many years, O God,
the spark of my life,
so that I may thank you daily
for the light of your blessing.

In the name of the Father, and of the son, and of the Holy Spirit- Amen.
