I’m always on the lookout for gluten free goodies… we don’t eat a lot of prepared treats in our house but we do like to try out new products and share them with you.
While out grocery shopping the other night, I came across this fabulous little box of gluten free instant oatmeal from GlutenFreeda. I was at our neighborhood Safeway, which up until now has NOT had a gluten free section. Their options were still rather limited, but I was thrilled to see new items popping up on the shelves.
This oatmeal is a RARE treat, it was just under $6.00 for a box of 6 packets. It’s perfect for taking along on trips and sleepovers at friends house… it’s pretty easy to locate some safe hot water to prepare it! The mixed box contains 2 packets each of Apple Cinnamon with Flax, Maple Raisin with Flax, and Banana Maple with Flax. The kids were a little apprehensive about reading FLAX on the box (even though they regularly get flax in their smoothies and homemade goodies). My kids are not fans of raisin so they are picking the little guys out prior to adding the hot water. (If the the price was lower and the flavors a bit more kid friendly, this would be a frequent purchase in our house.)
Seeing this box on the grocery shelf excited us! However, once we got home and opened it up, we realized these “treats” weren’t so tasty. I’m pondering why something as simple as a crisp rice treat is so difficult to manage in a gluten free form? These were also pricey and to us, not worth it!
Blisscuits, biscuit-cookies… the verdict is still out on these. The lemon was a little too “spicey” for my children. These goodies are made from a combination of almond meal and coconut, so they are nearly grain free (they do include baking powder, baking soda, and xanthan gum). Allergy alert- they contain dairy, egg whites, and almonds. The package states “gluten free recipe”, these products are NOT certified gluten free. They were $2.99 for a package of two cookies/biscuits. We brought home a package of lemon, cinnamon, and orange.
On a semi-regular basis, we receive a small box of samples to try out from the folks over at Enjoy Life. Recently they sent us an assortment of their Enjoy Life Boom Choco Boom bars. Who doesn’t like chocolate, right? As with all of Enjoy Life products, they are free of dairy, nuts, soy, and gluten. They are made in a dedicated nut and gluten free facility.
