Patriotism and My Kids

flagGrowing up I was a patriotic kid. My favorite songs have always been The Star Bangled Banner and God Bless the USA. I worry that my kids don’t get it. In schools today we often see the Pledge of Allegiance being left unsaid and for goodness sake, don’t let anyone sing a song that speaks of God.

Today, Oregon Dad and I had the opportunity to attend a school assembly for Veterans Day. The 3/4 classes “hosted” the assembly. Members of the Armed Forces (past and present) were invited to attend and be honored by our children. Our children have spent months learning songs that speak of our Country and our God jointly. They are learning what I learned, that God is integral to our lives and the well being of our Country. I can’t help but think our glad I am that our children go to this (public) school where we are allowed to have these assemblies, sing these songs and recite the Pledge in its entirety.

The assembly was far from perfect, the sound had issues and the H.S. bells interrupted a few times. None of that mattered. What mattered was the chorus of sweet, little voices singing about God and our Great Country. I had tears in my eyes and kept thinking, “stop being silly!”. Afterward another Mom, friend and fellow blogger told me that she was crying.

We love this Country and we believe that “One Nation Under God” is vital to our continuation.

Today this was more poignant than ever as we are about to select our next President. I am scared. I worry about our Country and our futures. I also know that no matter what, God will take care of us.

As I watch the polls tonight, I will hear the voices of these children and I will remember our Country is AMAZING. We are truly blessed to live here. I will pray to our God that he continues to watch over this Country and protect us no matter what comes.

One Response to Patriotism and My Kids

I agree. I don’t think kids totally get the patriotic thing either. It’s all so “Political”. It’s all about being politically correct, saying the right thing, making the right impression when you speak about what you believe. sometimes I feel like my teaching on what it means to be an american has fallen short. I’m not sure what I would change…but….I hope one day they grow up and they do get it.
