I am crazy careful about what K3 eats. I feed her all three meals… everyday. I take care of ALL snacks she consumes whether at home, school or away.
Recently we have noticed some reactions… the puzzle lies in the WHAT. On Thursday, I had a casual Mommy Date with another friend and her son. The plan was to let the little ones play in the fun area at the mall. I packed K3’s lunch and decided to let K4 eat at McDonalds while we were there. I have researched everything on McD’s menu and am well aware that there is basically NOTHING there that would be safe for K3, except a plain hamburger patty, the fruit and nut salad minus the nuts (the walnuts contain wheat of all things!) and yogurt, apple slices with no dip, a plain garden salad sans any dressing. If I am feeling really nice I will let her have ketchup which she loves but contains a ton of high fructose corn syrup. I decided to order K3 a hamburger patty while we were there, I figured she could put it on her corn tortilla and Tofutti cheese I brought. Afterall, the website proclaims the patties are 100% USDA Ground Beef, no fillers, no additives, no extenders, seasoned only with salt and pepper. What the heck…. sounds okay to me. The nice folks at the counter placed her little patty on a piece of lettuce in a plastic bowl w/ a lid (so much waster for such a little patty!). Within minutes of beginning to eat the hamburger patty with the piece of lettuce and a healthy dose of ketchup, K3’s cheeks were BRIGHT Red, her little nose started swelling and turning purplish… to the casual observer she might look slightly discolored or maybe sick, to me it was obvious she was having an allergic reaction. Over the next couple of hours she became even more agitated and still appears to be reacting 3 days later (we are concerned that perhaps we have missed another underlying health issue… I don’t know if celiacs being exposed one time to wheat would continue to feel/look ickey for several days!). My best guess is that either the burger was contaminated or the lettuce was. Maybe they use the same flipper to pick up the patty as they use on buns? Who knows… but my little munchkin definitely reacted right away. Now that K3 is off all the offending foods… we notice reactions right away. In the past… she was always discolored and cranky, etc… Now, she is a normal five year old… Most of the time! It is becoming increasingly apparent to me that NO matter how careful we are, this little one is very sensitive and we cannot risk any exposure. It is sad for her that we have to be so cautious… but what is the alternative?
