Every hour TeenGirl is getting a bit better. Yesterday, she was able to come off the cardiac support meds and her pressures stayed stable. This was good news indeed. The plan was to move her out of the PICU once that occurred, but we encountered another hurdle along the way.
Fluid on the lungs. Yep. Fun times. Let’s think here, fluid on the lungs often leads to PNEUMONIA. TeenGirl has no immune system (okay, not NO immune system but a severly compromised one, all of her B cells have been killed off by treatment). She cannot fight off infections. Pneumonia is a huge concern as it will put her right back to critical.
The Docs did a chest x-ray. Their response after reviewing the films? “Well, it’s not as bad as we feared but not as good as we hoped.” Whatever that means.
Things seem to be going along okay and with luck she will move from PICU to acute care today. She needs to be up and moving around to help clear her lungs. Getting a stubborn 15 year old up when she doesn’t want to is another story.
