This is Monday. The second seems so far away… however its only been five days.
On Wednesday I posted about sitting in the Hemoc Clinic. About the tragedy I saw around us. We were hopeful that TeenGirl was on the road to recovery and we were out of the woods.
Yesterday our world came crashing down around us.
On Saturday TeenGirl went to visit our Mom. Her visits are usually short in duration as Mom lives with Grandma and the house is small and crowded. Mom has ALS and is in a wheelchair 100% of the time, cannot talk or eat… she is fully with us mentally but her body has stopped working. This is why TeenGirl lives with us… why I have became her surrogate Mom in addition to her big sister. TeenGirl was going to stay until after her surgery (which was scheduled for today) to have her central line removed.
Sunday morning I received a call that TeenGirl was feeling really sick. She had a severe headache, was vomiting and felt like she would black out everytime she stood up. We were unsure what was going on. Saturday had been a very stressful day for her, so we wondered if she was reacting to that or possibly have a relapse of her disease (which is auto-immune in nature but not fully diagnosed). I had conversations with doctors in both the Hemoc and Renal departments and the decision was made to take TeenGirl to the ER at Doernbecher/OHSU.
Upon arrival, her blood pressure was 56/28. If she had not arrived at the hospital when she did, there is a likely possibility she wouldn’t be with us now.
It was quickly decided that she needed to be admitted to the PICU.
At this moment, she lies in an induced coma on life support.
Perhaps I should have knocked on wood when I wrote that last post.
